How do you feel about animal testing, baiting or fighting?

Cock fighting, dog fighting, bull fighting, guinea pigs, rats or rabbits used for testing products intended for human use.

Is there any need or justification for any of these?

I'm curious what is your answer Louise??  It sounds like you eluded to the fact you are against all that stuff, but you did not say one way or the other.

The animal fights for monetary gain are deplorable, period.

I can halfway understand using some animals for product testing prior to human tests, but ( and this is a big one), you have to know that just because it might work on animals can mean a lot, or a little. It depends on the animal, the test, and a lot of other factors.

I don't agree with any fighting Billy for monetary or any gain.  Whether it be animal vrs animal, animal vrs man or man vrs man... including boxing.  I don't understand how anyone can take pleasure in watching or taking part in a man or animal being hurt on purpose.

There are plenty of ways to test someone's strength or abilities without hurting others.

When it comes to product testing, I can understand the reasoning BUT surely they can find a better way than making animals suffer.  Perhaps with the right compensation they would have human volunteers.

Interesting, Louise. You would rather see humans suffer LOL.
Actually animals are used in the preliminary testing of medications only. From there they have to use clinical trials, at several different levels, before they are approved. Humans are re-imbursed for this level of testing. As for the animals...the testing is as humane as possible. I for one do not want anyone to take any drugs that have not gone through rigorous testing.  Now using animals for things like cosmetics, I do not feel the same way.
As for using animals for fighting purposes....totally inhumane.  Cruel, sadistic and sick.

Of course I wouldn't rather see humans suffer but why should animals suffer for us?

Testing for medications is more complex than that, Wind.  Initially tissue cultures are used.  Then two types of animals.  Then humans.  In the states the testing usually takes 7-9 years.  This article can explain it much better than I can.

The commonality between fighting and testing is the abuse.  And it is the abuse we are discussing.

Quote from wind090

Yes Nona, of course it is more complex!  ... but please remember, in school I had to learn Russian as a foreighn language prior to English, so my vocabulary is somewhat limited and I do not always find the time to write everything I would like to write in the way it would be correct (...or I would like to be understood), so please have patience with me...

By the way, the FDA does not always have the best reputation concerning this topic around here (and I'm sure it is the same with european institutions in the US).

You do very well, Wind.  If I had to learn Russian, as a second language, I know I would not be able to express myself as clearly as you do.  I have a hard enough time expressing myself in English.
A lot of Americans are also not enamoured with the FDA.  And, I have had friends that obtained medications from Europe. Rather than wait until the testing was completed and it was put the American market.

Wind, the GMO's and pest control agents are a whole new and interesting topic.  Perhaps you should open a thread concerning these issues.  Personally, I do not know enough about them...and it would be interesting to know the European viewpoint concerning them.
