you can browse for possible friends/relationships, send them Private Messages (PM's), post to their walls, poke or send other gifts, ask and answer poll questions, upload, comment on and view pics and videos. Join and/or create group(s)... and probably even more than that.
You may want to let your mom know to get out of those scammer filled sites, and educate her (and yourself for that matter) on how to tell the difference between a scammer and a real person on the internet. This page has a lot of good information on it : https://datingnmore.com/blacklist.php

its good if you always stay cautious until you feel very comfortable with anyone. Also always keep in mind that until you have met the person you are communicating with, they are a stranger to you.
