  • Gang linked to HK$58 million internet scam busted
Police said on Friday that they have busted an international gang that used social media to swindle HK$58 million from 73 people in Hong Kong.

In an international operation that involved Hong Kong, Malaysia and Nigeria, a total of 14 people were arrested. They are suspected of defrauding 86 people around the world of HK$60 million. The gang was made up of mostly Nigerians and Malaysians.

Most of the victims were educated women in Hong Kong. Gang members posed as professionals based in Western countries and used social media platforms to befriend them, before luring them into transferring money to the scammers' accounts.

One victim paid HK$9 million.

A Senior Inspector with the Commercial Crime Bureau, Lee Ka-wai, said the gang used social media apps to learn about the victims' habits to gain their trust.

KUALA LUMPUR: Fourteen suspects who allegedly cheated 84 women of S$11mil (RM34mil) through an Internet love scam were nabbed in Malaysia, reports said on Saturday.

Among those arrested are 10 men, nine of whom are from Nigeria and one from Sierra Leone.

A 43-year-old Singaporean was among the four women detained, Shin Min Daily News reported. The other three women were from Malaysia.

The masterminds were one of the Nigerian men and a Malaysian woman, said to be a couple, according to Hong Kong's Apple Daily.

The suspects, aged from 21 to 50, were caught in a joint police operation, dubbed Quiverline, carried out by police in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Nigeria.

Raids in Malaysia were carried out in Kuala Lumpur last week.

The suspects posed as successful Caucasian men and chatted with the victims online.

After gaining their trust, they concocted reasons to borrow money from them.

A total of 73 Hong Kong women and 11 Malaysians were conned of HK$58mil and RM1.2mil.

Some Singaporean women may also have been victims, Shin Min reported.

The police also seized more than 10 laptops, bank records and cash. - The Straits Times/Asia News Network

sadly, most of us have all learned from experience, and there are enough inexperienced people out there that get conned by these criminals that it makes it worth the criminals while to continue with their thefts.

Jurisdictional issues of cross border complaints complicate matters moreso, but the reason I posted this was to show that the law enforcement of different nations are starting to cooperate. Because of that hopefully sooner than later we can expect a large reduction in these types of crimes.
