Excerpt from Cosmo:

It is ridiculous that in this day and age of texting being our primary mode of communication that people still stand up their dates. There is literally no excuse to not show up to plans. If you don't want to go on a date, just come up with an excuse and don't go; you don't even need to lie to their voice, let alone their face. Here are 10 easy ways to avoid being a dick:

1. Say something came up at work and cancel ahead of time.

2. Say something came up with your family and cancel ahead of time.

3. Say something came up with your best friend and cancel ahead of time.

4. Say something came up with your apartment and cancel ahead of time.

5. Say something came up with your cat and cancel ahead of time. You don't even have to actually own a cat for this to work.

6. Say something came up with your health and cancel ahead of time.

7. Say something came up with your car and cancel ahead of time.

8. Say something came up with your cable and cancel ahead of time.

9. Say something came up with a sudden out-of-town guest and cancel ahead of time.

10. Find literally any way to tell the person you're not coming, rather than just bailing.

I agree completely.   I've actually overheard women talking about how they use "standing a guy up" on the first date as a test to see how badly they will want another date.

That never worked for me. If you stand me up, without so much as a prior courtesy call ( in today's world, an email, text, or whatever means of communication).... then that is it.

The only exception to that rule would be that if I got a call a few days later with her apologizing and inviting me to come see her in the hospital because of the accident she was involved in on the way to the date that she stood me up on....... and I have never had that exception happen.

I'm with you Billy, I think it's utterly rude and quite unnecessary to stand someone up.

As the list shows, any excuse is better.
