Thoughts on Legal Assisted Suicides ?

that is a good way to put it, Crystal. it is unfortunate law makers would not accept language so simple and easy to understand.

If "I, being of sound mind...." is true, ( or was at the time of writing). and the "body" part of the statement ( or mind, in cases like Alzheimer's, dementia, and similar stuff), and that person has an active advanced healthcare directive, then I see no harm it at all. It might be tough to find a doctor willing to break their oath of always helping people, but that is not the question here.

I have an advanced healthcare directive with several possibilities of "if this (situation), then wait (X) long before pulling the plug on the machines keeping me alive. But that could be quite different than assisted suicide. Pretty much pulling the plug on machines just says "don't rack up thousands or more / day to keep me alive hoping I will come back to life, pull the plug and let God decide it

What kills me is that the way the laws in this country are written now, you wind up in jail or a mental institute should you actively pursue your own death. lets say the reason was because you could not afford a place to sleep or feed yourself.... then what is the chance the hospitals will give you pro-bono treatment because you are unable to pay??? ZERO. The laws help only the medical community out, not the people.

I feel, as with abortions, it should be a personal choice.

If a person wants to take his own life, legally or otherwise, is his/her own accountability. I mean, it's their life they wanted to end and if he fails and survive the attempt that is God's will. They might have survived because somebody came to their rescue on time, otherwise they're dead. Unless there is an accomplice who facilitated their suicidal desire then the accomplice is liable of committing a crime. We don't know what the suicidal person is going through, perhaps their passing away would be more beneficial for the family and the society (like families who are in debt to sustain the life extension of a terminally ill patient). But committing suicide because of a broken heart is definitely crazy and should go to the asylum!

Anyway, these are all my personal opinion as I see things around me.

Totally agree with Crystal and Nona on this one.  Any decision is between the person and their immediate family.  I don't think anyone else has the right to interfere.
