EFCC arrests 5 undergraduates over alleged N16 million internet fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested five undergraduates- four from the University of Technology, Akure, and one from Adekunle Ajashin University, Akungba, over internet-related fraud.

According to EFCC, the suspects who go about with the name ‘Tsunnami Gang and Young Pablo Money,’ are between the ages of 20 and 23. Adeleke Paul, 21, Adebiyi Tayo Abudu, 22, Akinsanmi Olusola Adeniyi 21, Ogundile Ademola James, 23 and Okali Ugochukwu, 21 were picked up at an Off-Campus residence located at Stateline Hotel Road, off FUTA South Gate, Akure, Ondo State.

They allegedly swindled unsuspecting foreigners and others to the tune of N16M recently by engaging in fraudulent activities of obtaining money through false pretences.

At the point of their arrest, EFCC operatives recovered a 2006 black Toyota Highlander, 2010 light-green Toyota Camry, laptops, three Apple iPhone 6 and three Blackberry phones from them. Some implicating documents were also found and downloaded from their laptops.

They are to be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is completed.

BEVERLY HILLS, JULY 25, (THEWILL) – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Office, has arrested five university students for alleged internet fraud valued at N16 million.

The Head, Public Affairs of EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office, Mr. Ayo Oyewole, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Monday.

Oyewole said the EFFC on its official Facebook page listed the names of the suspects as Paul Adeleke, 21;Tayo Adebiyi, 22; Olusola Adeniyi, 21); James Ogundile, 23; and Okali Ugochukwu. 21.

He said that Adeleke and his co-travellers called “Tsunami Gang and Young Pablo Money’’ allegedly swindled unsuspecting foreigners and others to the tune of N16 million.

Oyewole said that the suspects had engaged in fraudulent activities of obtaining money by false pretence through scam mails.

The public affairs officer said that the commission got the wind of their activities through series of intelligence.

He claimed that four of the suspects were from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and the other one was from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba- Akoko (AAUA).

“Adeleke is a 300 student of Building Technology, Ogundile and Adeniyi are both 400 level students of Agricultural Resources and Mathematics, respectively at FUTA.

“Ugochukwu is a 200 level student of Urban and Regional Planning at FUTA, while Adebiyi is a 300 level Student of Mathematics from AAUA all in Ondo State, ’’ he said.

Oyewole said the suspects were picked up at an off-campus residence.

He said the EFCC recovered three Apple iPhone 6, three blackberry phones, and several incriminating documents at the scene and from their laptops.

Also recovered were a black Toyota Highlander (2006) with registration number (Lagos) LND 112 EG and light-green Toyota Camry (2010) with registration number (Lagos) AAA 850 EF, he said.

Oyewole said the EFCC would arraign the suspects in court as soon as investigation was completed.
