The man who used Craigslist to swindle potential renters is headed to prison.
David Linton, 30, of Rochester, used Craigslist advertisements to offer apartment rentals in buildings he didn't own from Feb. 22 through May 25. He was sentenced to 2⅓ to 7 years in prison by state Supreme Court Justice Francis Affronti on Tuesday.
Linton, who pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary on Nov. 17, broke into vacant apartments and showed them to prospective renters. He introduced himself as the property owner.
Prospective tenants gave Linton a security deposit and first month's rent for the apartments. Restitution totaling $6,218 was issued on behalf of the seven victims.
